IMMUNITY

The Immune System

The body's immune system is designed to protect itself from invasionby unhealthy bcateria and viruses. When the immune system is weak, infection can set in. Stress, weather changes, poor food choices, and lack of sleep can all contribute to a weak immune system.

Staying Well

The best way to prevent spread and onset of colds and flu is to use the common sense suggestions by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC):

Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Stay home from work, school or errands when you are sick
Cover your mouth or nose when sneezing or coughing
Wash your hands often to protect you from germs and viruses
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
In addition, certain herbs and nutrients taken before illness could help prevent the onset of infection. Echinacea and zinc may be useful as natural preventive agents since they support and enhance the immune system, helping the body to fight infection.

Getting Well

When you do get sick, follow these steps to help yourself and your family recover more quickly.

1. Rest. Rest is essential for recovery from illness. It gives your body time to deal with the infection without the added stress of normal daily life.

2. Consume hot liquids. Hot beveages, such as herbal teas and vegetable broths, can be comforting and soothing to the body. Several teas also incorporate herbs that calm symptoms while supporting the immune system.

3. Supplement with specific nutrients and herbs. Immunologists have discovered key nutrients that help build resistance to the common cold or flu. Vitamins A, C and zinc are recognized as the most significant in overall immune support. Vitamin A is anti-viral and is important in mintaining the integrity of mucous membranes, our first line of defense against viruses. Vitamin C is necessary for maintenance of white blood cell function, which is part of the immune system of the body. A deficiency of the mineral zinc lowers your defense against infection. Studies have also shown that zinc gluconate lozenges may shorten the duration of typicl cold.

4. Utilize Homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies are gentle, safe and effective. Several cold and flu homeopathic remedies are available that help reduce symptoms without unwanted side effects. Homeopathic products can be used by children and adults.

5. Ease symptoms with Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy utilizes scent from essential oils to evoke a healing response. Use essential oils in bath water, on your pillow, in a diffuser, or diluted in carrier oil and massaged into the skin. Eucalyptus is a well-known aromatic oil that can help open up the air passageways. It is very good for congestion. Rosemary and peppermint are also good revitalizing oils for cold and flu.

Remember, it is much easier to prevent a cold or a flu than it is to get rid of it once you are sick. Utilize these steps to keep your immune system strong all during cold and flu season.
